How to Wash Fleece Tights and Other Fleece Products

You just bought a pair of Fleece Chic’s viral fleece lined tights, soft, plush, and every bit as flattering as they are warm. They’ve probably already become your go-to for fall and winter outfits, whether you’re dressing up for a night out or running errands in the cold.

But now comes the big question: how do you wash fleece tights?

Our products are crafted with durable yet delicate fibers that withstand wear beautifully when properly cared for. With the right washing and drying methods, they’ll stay plush, fluffy, and perfectly stretchy for seasons to come.

This post will walk you through exactly how to wash your fleece tights, but it can also serve as a general reference for caring for other fleece pieces from Fleece Chic. Think of it as your go-to care guide, a reliable baseline for keeping your favorites soft, clean, and long-lasting. If you’ve ever wondered how to keep fleece soft and plush over time, these same principles apply to nearly all of our fuzzy apparel. However, always check the “Care” tab on the product’s page before washing, as some items may have specific instructions that differ slightly from what’s outlined here.

While our tights can be safely machine-washed, handwashing is recommended for best results. Nonetheless, since most people prefer convenience, this blog will focus on using a machine. Simply apply the applicable steps if you choose to wash by hand.

Step 1: Wash Similar Items Together

To protect the nylon exterior, wash your tights by themselves or with similar items to prevent unwanted wear over time. Avoid tossing them in with rough materials or anything that might snag, such as bras, jeans with zippers, or clothing with hooks.

Step 2: Keep Them Right-Side Out

As some of our customers have learned the hard way, you do not want to turn your fleece tights inside out before washing them. While it might seem like a way to protect the nylon (and technically it does), doing so often leads to excessive pilling as the washing machine forces the fleece through the outer layer. If you accidentally wash them inside out though, don’t worry. Our fleece lined tights are durable enough to handle lint removal with an electric fabric shaver (as we’ll discuss later). Still, to save yourself the extra step, it’s best to keep them right-side out. This simple habit will protect the fluffy interior and help it stay plush, a key part of how to keep fleece soft through many washes to come.

Step 3: Choose the Right Wash Settings

Fleece loves gentle care, and your washing machine settings make all the difference.

Water temperature: Always use cold water. Hot water can weaken elasticity, melt fabrics, and flatten the plush lining.
Cycle: Select a delicate or gentle cycle. If your washer doesn’t have that option, the lightest available cycle works too. This helps prevent felting of the fleece.
Detergent: Choose a mild detergent such as a baby-safe or delicate laundry formula. If not available, use your normal detergent.

Avoid using bleach or fabric softeners, as they coat the fibers and reduce their signature fluff. Avoiding harsh chemicals is also crucial for how to keep fleece soft and luxurious.

Step 4: Skip the Heat

When your plush clothing finishes washing, resist the urge to throw it in a hot dryer. You have two options:

Hang Dry (Best Option) - Simply hang your fleece tights to air dry. They do not need to be laid flat as they will keep their shape naturally.

No-Heat Dryer (Optional) - If you’d like to remove a bit of pet hair or lint, you can tumble them on a no-heat or air-fluff setting for a few minutes. This helps loosen any clingy fibers or hair without damaging the fleece. As this may take a while to dry the tights, we recommend still finishing them up by hanging.

The key is avoiding friction and heat. The less time your tights spend tumbling, the longer the inner fleece stays cloud-soft.

Step 5: Handle Lint and Pilling Like a Pro

A little lint or fuzz is normal with soft materials, and fleece is no exception. However, severe pilling (like shown below) usually only occurs if you wear our tights under pants or wash them inside out.

Fleece Chic's fleece lined tights are durable enough to have their lint removed with an electric fabric shaver.

The good news is that Fleece Chic's fleece lined tights are durable enough to handle electric fabric shavers. These handy gadgets can safely glide over the fabric to collect fuzz. They work perfectly to smooth any pilling that may appear after repeated wear. Because of the high quality of Fleece Chic's tights, you won’t snag or thin them if you use this tool correctly.

To make your accessory look new again, lay the tights flat and move the shaver gently in circular motions.

Step 6: Correct Snags

Snags are a part of life when it comes to tights, from catching them on a hangnail to brushing against rough surfaces. When it happens, don’t panic. Fleece Chic has the solution with our Snag Repair Needle. Rest assured, no sewing skills or crafting experience is required, and each needle comes with illustrated, step-by-step instructions.

To use it, locate the snag and insert the needle through the fabric from the outside to the inside. The tiny barbs on the tip will grab the loose fibers and pull them back through to the interior. Repeat as needed until the snag is tucked in and your tights look smooth again.

Quick Care Recap

  • Wash on cold
  • Gentle cycle only
  • No bleach or softener
